A space for memory - The space between perception and the object
QUESTION
How can the connectedness of inanimate objects in space interpret our experience of memory?
WHAT AM I SAYING?
Memory is a record of our experience of the world. In recollecting our memories we are telling the story of our lives and of what has determined our sense of self. By examining ‘inanimate’ objects in a way that encourages the object to experience, documenting them over time, and examining the interplay within an environment I am seeking to reveal a memory of that object.
WHY?
I am interested in notions of individuality in environments that are dictated societally and how definition of oneself is inherently linked to definition of the mass. Through this body of work I intend to look at the issue of how we relate to each other, and of how our joint environment informs our delicate understanding of ourselves.
I am also interested in how we hold joint responsibility for interactive spaces, in regard to physical spaces and digital spaces, and the affect that issues such as climate, wealth, and health can have on these spaces.
AIMS & OBJECTIVES
I will create a body of work that uses objects to examine shared experience and memory. I am interested in creating a memory of an object and looking at if/how its experience affects its environment.
By documenting how objects relate to their surroundings I hope to examine their connectivity and how they contribute to and are defined by their environment.
I am interested in how recording and reinterpreting objects though various visual means can reveal characteristics and identify surprising qualities. Informed by these discoveries I will continue to revisit the objects with the hope of creating a shared experience between them. I aim for these documents to become a record of their memory.
I am interested in creating images that treat these objects not as objects in space, but as a means to build a series of sequential interactions. In doing this I hope to inform an experience that highlights not what the object is but how it is. I will look at different ways to represent a ‘thing’ while trying to break free of a lingual definition or label.
METHODS
I will use the following techniques and methods:
-
Drawing: in limited and changing light conditions.
-
Photography: still, time lapse, long exposure.
-
Digital image manipulation and preparation.
-
Etching and relief printing.
I will record these objects using the aforementioned techniques and processes, by recording them using diverse means I intend to reveal different aspects of them. In identifying various aspects of the character and experience of these objects I will construct a diverse description of them. I will then use this body of work to identify and develop a visual language by which I can build imagery that describes the objects in a way that highlights subsidiary or less evident qualities.
In order to encourage experience and change in these moments I will begin by
documenting them at sunrise and sunset, times in our own lives that often accompany experiences of closeness or intimacy. In doing so I hope to galvanize an intimacy between the objects, their surroundings and myself.
I will use this initial imagery to develop the work using a language constructed through the identified techniques. I will reflect on the resulting works in relation to my aims and objectives, examine my findings and use them to inform another round of image creation and development.
