Artist Statement
I am interested in cyclical states of change in relation to environment and self. I explore these themes in liminal, dissonant work that requires resolution on the part of the viewer. Structurally, work occurs in sequences or in a single modulated image space. Through evoking a sense of ambiguity between internal and external space I explore themes including personal and public, and the conscious and subconscious. I am interested in recontextualising images by breaking them down and reinterpreting them metaphorically.
I use time based techniques in my work, such as digital scanning, short videos and time lapse photography in order to construct moments of fluctuation and instability. These processes can present opportunities to capture, affect and add through which I can construct a visual language that reflects the aforementioned themes. The processes are often looped or repeated, and with each pass undergo change. Layering processes serves to manipulate figurative elements such as structure and form, in interpreting these changes thematically I can develop metaphorical value in the works.
Being absorbed in digital process is an important part of my practice, however, traditional process also informs the development and outcome of an image. The sensations of analogue process can work to anchor and focus the ephemeral nature of digital. For example, considering rows of tiny LED lights that form a digital display, at the same time as forcing ink through a silk mesh. This informs a conversation about texture and detail and what is achievable or desirable. Decisions made during digital process are put under scrutiny by traditional technique as I work towards the goal of physical works.
I am interested in the relationship between both analogue and digital techniques. Particularly the point of exchange between the two, and what can be manipulated and interpreted in these moments. I am interested in examining this moment in regard to themes of memory and experience, looking for recognisable patterns and parallels that can be magnified, highlighted and distorted. I am interested in the passing of time and in using process and equipment to construct a framework that reflects, orders and correlates this experience.
